Gates of Graceland 1969 - July 31st acetates!

Post by Alan » Thu Apr 29, 2021 4:13 pm

So the show was recorded - had to be, but we didn't know it survived all these years - until now.

Two acetates made from a soundboard recording were given to Elvis to play back to hear how the show went. Watch this particular part from around 16:30 below.

The 8mm silent footage that we've yet to see from the opening show now has the audio to marry up to it.

When the complete RCA 1969 recordings were released why didn't Ernst talk to Graceland? He would have known they had this.

Get all excited over nothing.

Sorry Ernst, you already had it.

So it wasn't anything Elvis ever owned.
It was created by Joan Deary after Elvis died from the recording we've come to know as August 3rd Dinner Show
She mislabelled the acetate Las Vegas Hilton, and they didn't takeover the International until 1971.

Another gaff, Angie evens mentions "Bridge" as a part of the proposed setlist which Elvis wouldn't have known about until 1970.

Bonus though, the cloud with the silver lining - the intro on the acetate - it's never been released before. The one we have was overdubbed from another show, probably to give it more impact with the audience helping to build up the moment which you dont hear on the intro Angie played as the line in recording didn't pick the audience up, apart from a distant odd scream.

It gets complicated, doesn't it ?

If I've understood this right, an early 1969 show, whose exact date isn't known, was recorded & has been released for years.

This is often given the date of 3rd August.

Two acetates were made of bits of this show by Joan Deary & have survived.

She tagged them as being from 31st July in error.

So, we've already had the show released, but with a tagged-on intro from another show which had more audience reaction on it.

One of the acetates has the 'proper' intro which we haven't heard before.

If the exact date of the 'usual' recording isn't known, couldn't it actually be from the 31st July & Joan got it right ?

Ive asked the same question in the past.
Apparently those there on the opening night say the songs don't quite match, or what Elvis said isn't quite the same.

But, and there is a bit of a but, this was Elvis' first full blown show in an environment of that sort - you'd think he'd want to know what the audience were hearing and how not only he, but the band as well, sounded like.

All those rehearsals were for what? - well? How did it go?

A question Elvis either didn't want answered, or if he did it wasn't, or if it was we still haven't heard it yet.

Joan was recording for the benefit of us in the future that she knew very little what she had in her possession as she labelled it Hilton and not International.

I believe that soundboard is from the Opening Night. You see, all the releases have fades and patches from other shows. The applause is the same as what’s on the album “On Stage” and yes On Stage. They also rereleased that video without the “OS” parts because they played the masters/unedited/unheard. There are also fades and/or patches where the other songs would be. (Supporting the incomplete release). But basically we have information leading this to be July 31, 1969.

Except the tracks play identical when lined up to the date referred to as Aug 3rd 1969, though that date has never been confirmed 100%

What I’m saying is, “August 3” is misdated and actually Opening Night. It would make sense, if to have his first show recorded.

Yes, it would except the tracks sung don't match with what the audience and press say he sung.
Elvis also references something (can't recall what off hand without playing it back) that indicates this was not his first show.

I believe he mentions something about "it's hard to get used to these dinner shows"....or something to that effect.

While that saying is in there, we know that the tape is heavily edited. Using stuff from August 12, 1969 DS and August 21-26. My guess is they needed more monologue and added stuff from a later date. That was done 3 confirmed times on the tape.
