December 17, 1963
Elvis Presley was a generous man. Not only to those who worked for him, his family and friends, but often to strangers and regular gifts to charities, both national and local.
When Elvis first achieved his extraordinary level of fame, he used it to help raise money and awareness for many causes. He lent his name and image to the American Cancer Society, American library Association, March of Dimes, USS Arizona Memorial and other organizations. He gave thousands of teddy bears that fans sent him to be distributed to children’s hospitals.
In 1961, he started a tradition of distributing checks to more than 50 charitable organizations. Around Christmas time every year Elvis would donate around $100,000 to organized charities. Some of Elvis' generous gifts donated to charities would become public knowledge , but the rest of the donations were only known to a hand full of people, who were directly involved in his life. These generous gifts in total, annually would reach a figure of 2 million dollars during the period of Elvis' life when he was able to distribute that amount of money to organized charities.
On December 17, 1963, Elvis Presley arrived at the Memphis mayor’s office to hand out Christmas checks totaling $55,000. The checks benefitted 58 Memphis and Mid-South charities. More than 150 people jammed into the mayor’s office to see Elvis. When Commissioner Claude Armour announced Elvis was going to pass out the checks, the singer wiped his brow and said: “Elvis is going to pass out, period.”
In gratitude and appreciation for Elvis’ donations over the years, the organizations presented Elvis with a massive 6-ft wooden plaque in recognition for his contributions to more than 50 local charities. That plaque, along with numerous checks he wrote to charities, are on display at Graceland.
There is no more generous Santa Claus than Elvis Presley, who preferred that his philanthropy be kept low key or not be mentioned at all. Interestingly, more times than not Elvis asked one thing for the money he routinely gave to others and that was for his giving to remain solely between him and those who were tasked to making sure the people received the money.
