November 9, 1957

After a 4-day sail on the Matsonia, Elvis and his entourage arrived in Honolulu on November 9, 1957. It was his first ever visit to the Islands. It was a last minute decision to go to Hawaii and combine some business with pleasure. Fans from the islands have been requesting for Elvis to come do a live concert and since there was lull in his schedule due to the postponement of shooting for King Creole, the team headed to Hawaii for two performances on November 10 & 11.

Elvis arrived in Hawaii on the Matsonia at 9:00 a.m. and was welcomed by the shrieks of some 4,000 fans which led to headlines that read ““Presley Descends to Comanche yells of 4000 Admirers as Matsonia Docks”.

Prior to landing, he met the press aboard ship. The reporters had seized the opportunity and had already went out in boats to the ship. Dressed in a white sweater, brown jacket, black trousers, well-polished black shoes with checkered socks. Asked about his clothes, Elvis confessed: “I’m pretty green when it comes to clothes. I don’t pay over $7 for a shirt and $10 for a pair of shoes. But I do plan to stock up on a Hawaiian outfit while I’m here”. A reporter asked, "How do you feel about the fact that people call you" Elvis the Pelvis ". “It is very immature and childish” said Elvis." It’s as when a child is looking for something that rhymes with Elvis”. His traveling companions were mostly friends from high school and around Memphis, on this Elvis said. “I like to have my friends along” he told the reporters. “It gives me a little touch of home. Anyway, it’s more fun to see things together. I have a long waiting list of friends who want to go with me on the road”, he said. “In fact I’ve heard from lots of so-called friends from years ago who always say “You remember me, don’t you?”

When asked why he was getting there by boat, Elvis admitted “I don’t like airplanes. I’m scared stiff of them. In fact, we could’ve been on this one missing”. (He referred to the regular flight of the PAN AM with - including crew - 44 people on board, which crashed in the night over the Pacific and was missing.) When Elvis heard about the missing plane, he feared that the Jordanaires and the whole band have been on board of this machine, but they had taken a later flight and arrived safely in Honolulu later that day.

When Elvis finally disembarked he was welcomed with Hawaiian hospitality that went above and beyond! Many female fans adorned him with leis as was the Hawaiian tradition, but he was also the recipient of many kisses from female fans who left lipstick imprints all over his face. Not only was Elvis ‘leid’, his face was painted with red lipstick. When he and his entourage finally got away from the throng, they headed for the Hawaiian Village Hotel where a 14th floor suite was reserved for him.

Elvis did fall in love with the beauty of the islands and the hospitality of the people of Hawaii. The Islands are a true paradise for people in search of sun, white sandy beaches, surfing and beautiful nature scenes. Hawaii would become Elvis' favorite vacation destination and he would enjoy many vacations there.
