Yesterday << 14th July 1954, Wednesday >> Tomorrow

Possibly tomorrow on the 15th, but most likely today, Elvis went down to 1746 Chelsea Avenue in Memphis to watch his first record being made at Plastic Products. Ed Leek said he went there with Elvis and that Elvis was "like a little kid at Christmas".

In 1949 Robert E. Williams, known as "Buster" opened a pressing plant at 1746 Chelsea Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. He designed his own presses and shellac based amalgam compound for pressing the discs. Buster and Sam Phillips became good friends. Williams provided the warehousing, local distribution and manufacturing credit that was needed at the time. Many of the local labels did business through Plastic Products.

There was an article in the Memphis Press-Scimitar Tuesday 28th April 1959 which had a large feature in it about the plant. You can see it here at http://scottymoore.net/article590428.html
