Super fan who was there - Maria Luise Davies wrote:      We flew to Houston, arriving there Friday 27th February at 7am.
Colonel parker had asked us where we were staying in Houston and when I told him The Astroworld he had replied, "Good Lord, we're going to have to move out!!" So I said to him very reproachfully - "You know us Colonel, we won't give you any bother," and he then patted me on the arm and said quiet contritely, "I know, I know, you know how to behave, that is why everything has been arranged for you."
As it happens the Astroworld is a complex of Hotels known as the Astromain. It consists of the Astroworld Hotel which comprises luxury suites (even more expensive than the International), then a wing of cabina rooms around the pool, plus three or four Motor Inns and Holiday Inn Hotels. They all call themselves the Astroworld - leads to a great deal of confusion.
The Astrodome is billed as the "Eighth Wonder Of The world," modelled on the idea of the Colosseum in Rome, and is the only air conditioned stadium in the world. The audience can vary to a maximum of 60,000. It is covered and has seats comparable in comfort to a theatre.
We had booked for all six shows and had been allocated the same two seats in the front row for all shows. on the programme Elvis came No. 8 out of eleven events. They had a chuck wagon race as No. 7. This allowed everyones attention to be diverted while they got Elvis out of the bus and intom the convertible. First of all they towed the stage into position. The combo and the backing group were alreay in position, the technicians connected the cables. The stage revolved - not in a complete circle - but made a 180 degree turn to the left and then the same to the right. suddenly the lights went out and the spotlight was focused on this small red convertible and Elvis was driven onto the field. He was driven right around the arena and passed within a few feet of us. Then the car was driven up to the stage and Elvis went up some steps to the stage.
For the 1st show on Friday afternoon 27th February, he had on the white and gold "Lariate Suit" with the white and gold sash. Elvis sang, "All Shook Up," "I Got A Woman," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Don't Cry Daddy," "Heartbreak Hotel," "Hound Dog," "Love Me Tender," "One Night," "Release Me," "Walk A Mile In My Shoes," ""In The Ghetto," " I Can't Stop Loving You," "Polk Salad Annie," "Suspicious Minds," and "Can't Help Falling In Love." The sound wasn't too bad considering the size of the place but it was difficult to hear Elvis when he was talking. There were 4,000 handicapped children in the audience as guests of the Rodeo officials. there were quite a few empty seats at the show (the only time) and some fans were upset and said elvis should not have been asked to do a matinee on Friday, as it was a working day. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned it provided Elvis with a dress rehearsal. We heard he was upset that the sound was not good enough and his own engineer came down and worked seven hours to get it right for him. At the end of the show Elvis was driven around the arena again and back to the bus.
At the evening show at 8pm Elvis wore a white and emerald green suit and sang the same songs as the afternon show except that he replaced "One Night," with "Kentucky Rain."
